If a portion of this blog is going to be faith-related, and if I’m going to share with you Christian-based inspiration, I think it’s important that first you know my story and how my faith has evolved throughout my life.
Childhood
I grew up in a Catholic home, and attended a Catholic school in grades K-12. We went to church every single Saturday evening, prayed before meals as a family, and talked about God often. So my faith has always been a part of my life. And no, I don’t have one of those “came-from-nothing” conversion stories where I was introduced to God in my later years and completely turned my life around. Although those stories are always amazing to hear!
Nevertheless, I am SO incredibly grateful for my parents raising me the way that they did. Going to a Catholic school, I was able to learn so much on a consistent basis. Making church a priority, and simply teaching us how to pray, are things I am now trying to teach and instill in my own children. So thank you, Mom and Dad, for raising me on such a solid, faith-based foundation.
College
When I went to college, I started attending a non-denominational Christian church with my friends (and my now husband!) My eyes were opened to a different kind of worship experience. Same beliefs, same teachings, same Bible, same Jesus … just a different way of worshipping. I remember thinking to myself, “Ok, they’re saying all the same things I learned in a Catholic school and at a Catholic church. The music is just a little more upbeat.”😂 And that is why, even though I am still attending a non-denominational church now, I am so grateful for my Catholic upbringing and would not change it for the world.
Adulthood
Fast forward to March 2020. My husband and I had been attending Rock City Church in Columbus, Ohio for about 8 years, and I realized it was time to re-dedicate my life to Christ and be baptized. Now, this wasn’t exactly an easy decision for me, and I pondered it for probably the entire 8 years.
Of course, I was baptized as a baby, so initially I thought I didn’t “need” to get baptized in my adult life. I guess it took me 8 years to realize it wasn’t about the “act” of baptism. It wasn’t about if the water had washed over my head once in my life or not. For me, it was about making the conscious decision to make a commitment to Jesus on my own. My baptism as a baby was my parents’ decision, which like I said, I’m forever grateful for. But I wanted to privately and publicly tell God that I am all in… forever.
When I told my parents about my decision, I was incredibly ecstatic when my dad asked if he could get baptized along with me! He had also gotten baptized as a young child, but wanted to make the commitment as an adult. And that’s exactly what we did on March 8, 2020, about one week before the whole world shut down! Best experience – hands down – that can’t even be put into words. Best decision – hands down – of my life.🙌
